The Peacocks in their 2003 beginning were simply The Art Bunch. Six who became friends were in classes taught by Chuck McLachlan at Greensboro Cultural Arts Center and his studio.

During a class hiatus, Jan Bartlett approached Larry Benner and Doris Dale Paysour about forming a weekly paint group. They worked out plans for rental space at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. The original six also included Cheryl Hunt, Nancy McNally and Phyllis Sharpe. Later Sally Lambrecht and Alice Bachman joined. When Sally left for other plans, Stella Jones replaced her.

The name change to The Peacocks was written in the stars. Paysour made the discovery. Glancing through The Greensboro News & Record before heading out to paint, she found under her Capricorn sign in the astrology column this prediction: “Today you will be with a bunch of peacocks.”

The bunch unanimously made it so.
